In his 55 fight career, did Shane Mosley wear the "Sugar" tag rightfully?

When you hear "Sugar" in boxing, of course you think of Ray Robinson and Ray Leonard...some may even know of Sugar Ray Seales. Ray Robinson fought 200 fights and was never knocked out. Ray Leonard was only stopped once (in his last bout) in 40 professional bouts. Shane Mosely was a multi-divisional champion who fought 55 times and never was knocked out. Did he deserve the tag "Sugar"?

Yes, in mosley's prime he showed great heart, speed, foot work, and power. Much like the real "sugar", ray robinson.

'Sugar' Ray Seals never lived up to expectations after winning a gold medal in the 1972 olympic games but 'Sugar' Shane Mosley did beyond what most anyone expected of him winning world championships in 3 weight divisions and never ducking any opposition. If he thought any fighter was worthy for a rematch he gave one, 'Sugar' Shane Mosley always gave his best in all of his fights.......UNTIL-he fought Manny Pacquiao for the first time I saw Mosley go into survival mode and only do the bare minimum to avoid the match being stopped. After over an 18 year professional career I sure hope he hangs up the gloves for good-but yes he in my opinion very rightfully wore the 'Sugar' tag.

When Mosley was at his best, he was a very formidible and skilled fighter beating people like De La Hoya twice and Fernando Vargas. Lost two tough fights to the late great Vernon Forest. Very fast hands, good power and of course that ever solid chin. Of course Robinson is widely regarded as the greatest p4p figher of all time and his only kayo loss was due to heat exhaustion vs Maxim in a fight he was winning and Sugar Ray Leonard was also a very fast and formidible fighter beating such men as Duran and Hearns in his career suffering one career kayo loss. If Mosley would have stood there and traded punches with Pacquiao on Saturday, he very well may have had to endure his first loss by kayo in his career. He instead chose to stay away from Pacquiao which enabled him to last the distance but did nothing to help him win obviously. Mosley has had a splendid career and fought some truly big names along the way and yes he has never lost by a kayo, so he gets to wear the Sugar tag. But truth be told, none of these Sugars compares to Sugar Ray Robinson even on their best day!

To the person below me, thanks for pointing that out. I don't know what I was thinking when I typed it originally but I corrected it.

    No!

Neither did Leonard and definitely not Seals...

There's only one Sugar Ray and that's Walter Smith Jr.!

Well to some sort. He did had a great career. He had a great career. He was in his prime when he fought De La Hoya, Winky Wright, Mayorga, Cotto, Margarito, and Mayweather. By the time he fought Pacquaio he was already downhill.

The nickname should end with the great "Suge" Knight. C'mon now, everyone knows that.

Source(s): Vanilla Ice told me while Suge was hanging him upside down out of a hotel window.
