Basically, all you need to do is simplify the side with the square root until all you have is the square root. Then, you just square both sides and simplify.
Simple.

1) square both sides...........(x -3) = 9 (x+12).....x - 3 = 9x + 108.. ..8.x = -111.....x = -111/8
2) rearrange and square both sides ......solve the quadratic.
