What happens if a package is sent to an address, via USPS, without a mailbox, but they do have a PO Box?

I ordered an item online and unknowingly sent it to an address that does not have a mailbox. However this address does have a PO Box in town. Will USPS likely just leave it at the post office, for that PO Box, or not? I'm not sure if a PO Box is linked with an address or not.

The name would be unfamiliar to the Post Office as this is a house that is rented out and so there are continuously different people living there at different times.

I've contacted the sender to let them know they might get the package returned to them. Worst case I'll have to give them the PO Box to send it to, but I'm just wondering if USPS will be able to work it out? Thanks

Update:

The item i ordered wasn't for me, it was a gift that i had sent to someone else. Surely I would know my own mailing address and whether or not i had a mailbox.

if YOU ordered it, how did you send it to a wrong address?

the post office will have no idea that address has anything to do with any PO box - it will probably be returned

when they deliver- the address is what counts, not the name on the package

USPS will not work it out. If the PO Box number is not on the address, they can not link a street address to a PO Box. If the package is undeliverable, they will return it to the sender.
