Canelo Alvarez vs. Juan Manuel Marquez, your thoughts?

I am wondering why Oscar de la Hoya's GBP offered Canelo Alvarez to JMM as his opponent when he can offer Victor Ortiz. I doubt if Canelo can make even 147#. If they want to keep JMM, why they have to offer Alvarez as a counter offer to the offer of TR, a triology between JMM and Manny. Why not Victor Ortiz who is a much smaller fighter than Canelo.

Update:

@ Kapre,

I am just wondering why GBP offered Canelo instead of Victor Ortiz. Both fighters were under GBP promotion. Canelo, I believed can not make 147# while Victor just went up to Welterweight. I want to see that fight too but there might be criticism again since JMM is around 38 yrs old.

Actually, if Golden Boy wants to match the offer Top Rank did, then they would have to match the catchweight too....so they mentioned Ortiz as a possible opponent.

Canelo can make 147. But he will struggle below. Canelo is actually a small Junior Middleweight. But as far as Victor Ortiz, he can make from 140 to 147. But there is no way GBP can offer the same money as Top Rank. Marquez isn't dumb, he will take where the money is. Boxing is business, that's how it goes.

At this point and time I would pick Marquez and here's why. Canelo Alvarez Looks good But over the years I have seen hundreds like him come and go, James Kirkland being the latest. I really like the red head and wish him the best, however I don't think he is a elite fighter and will never be one. He has no defence and it's going to catch up with him. I may be wrong, time will tell.

Canelo Alvarez like Manny Pacquiao is just too big for Juan Manuel Marquez but he is even bigger than Pacquiao this fight would just be a very good bigger man fighting against a very good but getting up there in age and very small welterweight-what a mismatch GBP needs to look at making matches outside of their promotions cuz this flat out SUCKS!!!

Alvarez might be able to make 147 lbs, his fights have all been above that weight though. At 147, I think Marquez would still beat Alvarez. Alvarez is still young while Marquez is an elite veteran, not just an old one.

As far as Alvarez vs. Ortiz, I think that would be a good fight next year or at the end of this year, Ortiz isn't that great but still best to let Alvarez gain more experience.

I want to see Pacquiao beat Marquez up. If Katsidis can mess up with Marquez's face, can't wait to see what Pacquiao can do. So Canelo will just have to wait.

    Edit:

Just shows that Greedy Boy Promotions matchmakers are stupid. Who can blame them? They're the lot who wear fishnets...
