Calling all find and replace experts!?

I have a large research paper with superscript numbers representing references, numbered in the order they appear. I ended up having to add 4 references to the beginning of the paper and now I need to renumber sources #1-103 to be #5-107. Is there an easy way to do this? Like some sort of formula that adds 4 to every superscript number? I found a way to search specifically for superscript and ignore the other numbers, but when I search for 1 for example, it also gives me 10 and 100. So at the very least, I need to be able to find a way to exclude 10 and 100 when I'm looking for 1, but if there is a way to just add 4 to every superscript number, it would save me a lot of time and effort.

And yes, I know that Word 2003 is outdated, but I started the paper 3 years ago in 2003 and I won't upgrade until it's done because it would change the format and mess me up even more.

Had you used Microsoft's own footnoting system, inserting new footnotes would automatically update the existing ones. Now you have a choice: update the numbers by hand or convert them all to the Word system.

Personally, I'd take Door 2. The amount of work is about the same and the benefits are higher.

Basically, I'd do this for each existing "footnote" (this should also give you the procedure for inserting the four new footnotes):

    1. Select the text for an existing "footnote" and press CTRL/C to copy it

    2. Select the "footnote" reference (the superscript).

    2. Click the Insert->Reference->Footnote menu item.

    3. Click Insert.

    4. Press CTRL/V to insert the existing footnote's text.

    5. Delete the existing "footnote".

    Hope that helps.
