The best diets for weight management and weight loss are special Veterinary diets. These diets have far fewer calories than most "weight management" foods you'll find OTC. I'll link to an example below and to a Veterinary weight loss program you can find on the web.

One problem with so called "weight management" foods in the grocery store or the pet store is that many of them are not that low in calories. You can help your dog lose weight with these but you have to be very cognizant of the amount you feed. I wrote an article on this subject that I'll attach below for more detail.

Fit and Trim is one product available in the pet and grocery store that is fairly low in calories. It has about 1500 calories per pound. The Veterinary Diet I recommend has fewer than 1200 calories per pound by comparison. The EVO diet referenced in other answers has over 1700 calories per pound and illustrates the point I make about so called weight control diets and how many calories they actually have.

I work at a pet store and there are two different foods from this company (one is for weight LOSS, then once the dog is at an ideal weight, the 2nd formula is for weight MANAGEMENT) - the best thing about these foods too is that they are actually high quality foods, and not some junk found at the super market or wal-mart. The food is called "Premium Edge" and my customers' dogs have had excellent results with this food. There are no undesirable ingredients in it such as corn, wheat, soy. There is actual meat in these foods with wholesome grains such as barley, oatmeal, and brown rice. Like the other suggestions about EVO weight management - that's a good choice too.

Here are links to each formula.

You will only find this food at select pet stores (petsmart and petco DO NOT carry it, but smaller pet stores do, as well as tractor supply stores/agway)...just call around or even try to order it online if you cannot find it - believe me, it's worth it! Good luck.

EVO Weight Management is an excellent choice. I would not recommend most diet foods because they are so full of cheap fillers and cellulose/sawdust they end up causing malnutrition. But EVO WM does not and is an excellent quality food. It can be fed to any dog to maintain their weight or to loose weight. And the bag has two different feeding amounts, depending on what your dog needs. So its not really a diet food. Or you can just reduce the current food you are feeding. But usually excessive carbohydrates are the cause of weight gain. So any low carb food would be a good idea.

The protein content recommended for a balanced diet for dog is 20 to 30 percent.therefore we must be sure to include protein rich food in our dogs diet.water should not be mixed with milk,we must give moderate quantity of milk because over consumption can cause diarrhea.we must provide clean water at regular basis to the dog.dog need enough amount of food with fats and oil in order to stay healthy.nutritious food also helps to improve the digestive capacity of the pet.minerals such as calcium and phosphorous are also essential for dogs.perfect health can only be accomplished with balanced diet so be sure to take good care and provide all essential nutrients needed.

  • Seconding the EVO WM food, in addition to most other high-protein/low carb foods (such as grain-free foods). Go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ and take a look at the 5-6-star foods.
