    There are several possibilities.

    1) They are either half-siblings, or 2nd, 3rd, or 4th cousins.

    2) They are step-siblings, or some sort of cousin.

    3) They have a common ancestor that was born from a previous sexual union of cousins or siblings. This is a multiple-relationship issue: it takes a computer to figure it out, and most software will not report this in a kinship report. Family Tree Maker 16 did. Thanks to two previous marriages of cousins in colonial days, I am my 1st cousins' 6th and 9th cousin. My sibling also is reported thusly. So is my mother, though the cousin status is "once-removed." In fact, I'm a 6th and 9th cousin to myself!

Nobody talks much about #3, because it sounds "ucky," but marriages of people into their own line at some point is unavoidable in you family history. Safe to say, even 1st cousins have enough varied genetic information to be workable, and 2nd cousins (really common in isolated communities) was common.

(Marriage between cousins is also absolutely necessary. Otherwise, there could not be 'pedigree collapse,' and the population of the Earth during our distant ancestors time would be nearly infinite.)

All of us have a total of 2 thumbs and 8 fingers. I've counted.

If a woman had a child with Man 1 and later had a child with Man 2. And Man 1 and Man 2 were brothers. Then children would be half siblings (same mother, different father) and cousins as there fathers were brothers.

Fairly easily. First cousins marrying is legal in some states making their children both siblings and second cousins, Second cousins can legally marry in all states their offspring are siblings and 3rd cousins. If they are half-siblings and not full siblings could be a case of the parents not in common being siblings (ie mom had children by 2 brothers or dad had children by 2 sisters) making the offspring half-siblings and first cousins. Could be the product of a (not legal) incestuous relationship between siblings. No way to know what it is in their case unless you ask. If they are freely sharing the information that they are cousins and siblings it would not (in my opinion) be considered rude to inquire further, just don't push if they don't want to share.

I believe there are two cases.

Three-quarter siblings have one common parent, while their unshared parents have a mean consanguanuity of 50%. This includes full siblings and parent/child. Three-quarter siblings share more genes than half siblings, but fewer than full siblings. There are two genetic scenarios for 3/4 siblings:

    1) Vertical: In this case a woman has children with two men who are father and son, or a man has children with two women who are mother and daughter. These children will be three-quarter siblings.

    2) Horizontal: In this case the unshared parents are full siblings. Furthermore, the three-quarter siblings are also first cousins. This can happen by a man impregnating two sisters, or two brothers impregnating the same woman. Also,in the case of the unshared parents being identical twins, they are effectively full siblings.

"Sibling cousins" are those who have the same mother with their fathers being brothers or cousins, or who share the same father with their mothers being sisters or cousins. This is a broader category than, but inclusive of, the horizontal 3/4 sibling above.

1 man had sex with 2 sisters and conceived babies with these 2 sisters. Because they have the same dad they are siblings and because there mums are sisters they are 1st cousins.

Now extra brain teaser, what if they are born on the same day, does that make them twins?
