YOU WILL COMPARE TWO PRE 1914 POEMS WITH POEMS FROM CLUSTER 2 ( CAROL ANN DUFFY) and so on...

    heres what you do..

    establish a BINARY CONNECTION

(that means pair the poems up)

A TYPICAL QUESTION WOULD BE compare how the poems the laboratory and Anne Hathaway present feelings with 2 other poems from the anthology.

so im going to pair up the laboratory and hitcher because they are about mad people

whilst at the same time connecting on my first sonne and Anne Hathaway as they are about love

then i would say this in my introductory paragraph which sets out an example of how your essay is likely to be structured.

    e.g

the poems Anne Hathaway ,On My First Sonne, The laboratory and Hitcher (state what similarities they have) all use similar language to put across feelings. However Anne Hathaway and On my first sonne, present feelings of love, whilst, Hitcher and The laboratory use this language to emphasize an insanity. (STATE WHICH POEM IS MOST EFFECTIVE) The poem the Hitcher is most effective as it treats death as an every day occurrence for the narrator, making it seem more cold, therefore creating a deeper impact.

then go onto splitting up the poems into four dimensions

1st para language- what language techniques does this poem use to create an effect- how does this impact the reader--(aliteration, superlatives so on) LOOK UP LANGUAGE TECHNIQUES

2nd what feel and imagery does this give the reader-- what words make you feel like e.g death creates pictures of horror how does this relate to the topic, what does this do to the reader

3rd structure how are the poems arranged what does this do-- e.g does it have an irregular sentence structure

4th conclusion- answer the actual exam question in detail- what is different about the poems what is the Aurthurs aim.

GOOGLE SEARCH THE POEM NAME FOLLOWED BY "POWERPOINT" OR "ANNOTATED" AND CLICK ON THE ONE WITH THE SYMBOL TO GET THE POWERPOINT.

the poems have to relate so they have a theme, childhood, time and so on.

into start by saying which are the poems and who wrote them. say what each poem represents

then in the first paragraph start by going into detail; dont just explain one poem but take bits and pieces from 4 poems it will show you have studied

2nd paragraph do the same, remember to use quotations

    (you can include the structure)

then conclusion you should end with a question, by bringing up a question or a quotation

    goodluck

    1para: Content/ Themes

    - What are the poems about?

    2/3 para: Language/ Style

    - Poetic techniques - alliteration/ metaphors/ similes.

    1/2 para: Structure

    - How poems are laid out

    - punctuation/ stanza

    1 para: Personal response

    - How does the poem make you feel?

Use this as a rough guide line and always relate back to the question!

    Hope this helps!
