Can a teacher get in trouble for this?

I've been struggling in my accounting class all year its been really hard for me. I took my final yesterday and afterwords asked my teacher what my grade was for the 4th quarter and it was a 69 (D) only one percent away from a C and I said ohh okay and hes just like im sorry, and i said yeah its alright i was just hoping i would get a C. And i was going out and he's like you know what im gonna give you a C for the quarter because you deserve it so he just went in and changed my grade up a percent. i was so surprised, i didn't think teachers could do that??

Update:

I wasn't planning on telling anyone because I don't want him to get into trouble.

A lot of times, professors will take into account your effort in a class when deciding your final grade. It isn't unusual for a professor to round up to the next letter grade if you are on the edge, especially if he has seen that you care, and are putting in the time/effort. It's one of the reasons you should try to talk with your professors, both in class and out of class. Sometimes, just showing them that your care, or are interested, is enough to make a difference. :)

The fact that he changed your grade one percentage point is not the big problem. The trouble is that he only did it for you. Teachers can't possibly give every student the exact same treatment because some students do have special needs. However, fairness should not be shown towards a particular person or group. You don't know how many students were one percentage point away from the next grade up, and unless the teacher went back and changed the grades of every student that was it is a question of fairness and favoritism. The professionalism of the teacher would be questioned if you were to say something.

Classroom tests are not valid enough to say that 1 point or one percent makes a clear distinction between students. The problem is that school has accustomed us to the idea that you can put an absolute value on someone's knowledge or worth, but that really isn't true. Even the big standardized tests that have been validated only measure a part of what students know and can do. Fortunately, teachers do have a bit of leeway in evaluating students so that they can take into account effort, attitude, ability to apply the knowledge they've received, etc. You won't get him into trouble, but it would be just as well if other students didn't find out- they'll all be arguing with him to raise their grades!

I'm sure you could get him in trouble if you just really wanted to, but lots of teacher do that without telling anybody. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Every once in a while they just want to know that you care. One point was for showing that you do care. +1

They may not get into THAT much trouble, but it will cause controversy, so keep that between the two of you.

Effort counts sometimes or he could say he made a mistake

They CAN. The thing is, they're not ALLOWED to. They could get fired for it. So if I were yuu, I wouldn't say anything about it to someone who could get them in trouble.

If you don't say anything he wont!

If you do tell of him you'd be cutting your nose of to spike your face.
