Can a non-native speaker of English pursuit a degree in creative writing at a US university?

I am almost finish with my BA in English and Literature and would like to apply for an MFA in Creative Writing at an US university. However I'm having cold feet since I know learning English for a non-native speaker has already been a tremendous task, not to mention creative writing. I just want to ask: What are the odds and do you know any living examples of my case? Would appreciate all the answers I can get.

Update:

Ha ha silly me, thinking of that when having grammar error right in the title. I do want to pursue the career of a writer but I guess doing that in a non-native language can likely prove fatal just as the situation above.

Having another first language will not disqualify you. Two of the greatest modern novelists in English, Joseph Conrad and Vladimir Nabokov, were not native speakers of English as you probably know. However, they did not have to earn M.F.A. degrees in creative writing. I do not believe that it matters that they are deceased. Publication standards were much higher during their lifetimes than they are now.

Earning an M.F.A. does not create writing ability even for people who are native speakers of English. It may refine the writing ability which they already have. It is one of the most useless master's degrees. Do not spend time and money earning it.

As your grammar appears to be an issue, please be aware that your question contains at least seven errors in capitalization and grammar. I will be glad to explain them if you email your entire question to me.

    Best wishes.

I don't see any reason for them to not accept you. I would just take extra care to revise any pieces of work you have to send in for applications, making sure to have the proper form of a word. If you have a good style and some experience behind you, I see only success in your future.

My neighbor was born and raised in the Philippines (his family moved here when he was around 12) and he is now a doctor in some sort of micro-biology working for the CDC.

    Hope this helps!

(Also, in the title of your question, you have 'pursuit', which is a noun, where I believe you wanted the word 'pursue', a verb. Other than this your grammar and spelling is impeccable. If you would like help revising any works, just send them to me in an e-mail and I'll happily read them over for you!)

  • Yes you can pursue a creative writing degree in any US university of your choice. You would have to work twice as hard though. I personally dont have any examples.
