Does anyone else hear music all day long... without any actually playing?
unlike a lot of folks these days, I would say that I spend the better part of my day with out music actually playing. I just don't concentrate well with any outside distractions. But half the time, I don't even really notice, because I always have music playing in my head. Like, not snippets, but I hear whole songs from beginning to end, to the point where I can focus on basslines, drum, etc, like I was actually playing the album. My fingers are always either drumming or plucking in time to the bass or drum parts of various metal songs. For instance I have been alternating between "For Whom the Bells Tolls", "Lain With The Wolf" and "The Wicker Man" all day... yet have only actually listened to music from links on peoples Qs.
Yet unless I am deeply focused on something, (like taxes..ugh!) I can't stop the music from playing.
Just curious if that is normal.
BQ- Now Playing?
BQ- Coolest song/album you have heard this week?
@Rainbows, indeed I do, and looking at the answers here, makes me think those shrinks might be more onto something than people want to admit, about how much music CAN affect us. Having stuff running subconsciously like this can't NOT affect our thought process, I would think. Funny past is, I don't think I was always like this, I really don't remember it in High School or as a young man.
Are we getting SO over-saturated with multimedia distractions that it effects our ability to really focus and concentrate? (seems like most people can't function without their Ipod on, TV on and computer on, while texting people these days)
About the only time things really seem quite is when I am underwater, for some reason. Down there it all goes away.

Hello there, my dear friend... it's a pleasure seeing this question!
I definitely understand what you're getting at here. I too also do my daily work/chores/play with music in the background about... 75% of the time. But it saddens me to think that it's just in the background and that I'm not passionately loving it and appreciating it as much as I really should.
However, sometimes I sigh, lean back (wherever and whatever I'm doing), and just... listen. At night I would sometimes stare at the wall while taking in the music. Sometimes I'd put the same song on shuffle about 10 over times, just breathtaken about how genius and how beautiful these musicians are.
Like you, sometimes while I'm listening, I single out an instrument and I just listen for it. (the instrument usually being the drums, I really enjoy the familiar, stable sound of the drums.) I sometimes try to drum along with the song, which can be fun (but also horribly embarassing)... and that's when I really really enjoy my music... although many on here do not believe in a God, I do thank God sometimes when I do actually... just... listen.
Then there's some songs that command total attention. Some of those I'd say are Radiohead songs, Smashing Pumpkins songs, Phoenix songs, all the usual. And that's how I found out that I truly loved those songs and that I'd never ever stop loving them. Easier way than to just listen to them 1000 times and singling them out, or even worse - trying to make a list of your favorite songs! That's so so hard.
Peaches, if that is not normal, then you and I are the oddest human beings to walk the earth. Although I think other people wouldn't really appreciate it as much as us. :)
BQ: Luna - Smashing Pumpkins. In my opinion, the best ending song to an album, ever. Take a listen to it if you ever can - it's my favorite song.
BBQ(yum): Really in love with your total favorite, Radiohead right now. But since I'm a crowd pleaser, I'll also say that I'm really loving "Meet Me in the Bathroom" by the Strokes.
Erowid on here also showed me a really cool song called "Apple Bomb". I have to thank him..
thanks for making me really consider about this...

Uh...its always playing in my head. Music has affected me more than i like. I thought music is just pure entertainent and nothing else but its come to a point where my current addition to music is not good. There is *always* a tune in my head. Its frankly annoying. I don't know what to say or explain. Its wierd because until a couple of months ago i didn't even like music so much!! How can such a big change overcome me so FAST?
Okay i was whining more that answering there but you get my point KP?
I don't like music very much.
BQ - Nothing. My ears need some rest.
BQ2 - Warpaint - The Fool
EDIT: I couldn't have explained properly. Exactly my thoughts. You worded them properly. I underestimated music for a long time. Its more powerfull than i thought.

God yes, only all the time. I think it's natural for any music lover for that to happen to though.
BQ- Trampled Under Foot - Led Zeppelin
BQ- I was listening to some Pink Floyd and I can't stop thinking about the album Dark Side Of the Moon. For some reason my brain finds the most random things amusing.

With me it's more snippets. I don't do whole songs very often. I have a very active mind and it wanders a lot. And anyway, the only time I'm not listening to music is when I'm watching TV or asleep.
BA: Blazin - In This Moment
(Yeah, the dreaded Metalcore. Never know what I'll listen to next)
BA: Living With The Ancients - Blood Ceremony. It's like the resurrection of Black Sabbath.

Yeah! This happens to me too, it plays in my head all day long. I also don't really notice it. Like when I saw this question I realized that there was a song playing in my head but I didn't realize it. The songs don't always play from the beginning though, but sometimes they do if I know the song well.
BQ: School Uniforms by The Wombats via in my head.
BBQ: Greetings from Michigan: The Great Lake State by Sufjan Stevens

I *ALWAYS* have a tune in my head. Sometimes one is inadvertently stuck there. Usually, I'll wake up in the morning with that same song that was stuck in my head when I fell asleep. I hate it when that happens. Why can't sleep erase it? I'll never know. But it's rare when I do get that earworm I hate, and normally it's after too many listens (inadvertently, at work when it's uncontrollable and such) to a pop song.
BA: Betty Davis Eyes (I'm at work, yes)
BA: Pleasures of the Flesh - Exodus

I don't hear actual music playing all day, but I can hear music in my head like you. I can Focus on certain parts of the song, and get details and I can also change them if I want. Like if I play it in my head I'll change guitar solos or drumb beats. And if I feel like i will actually physically make beats with the song with my teeth, and sometimes hummin along with it. Maybe it's odd, but it helps playin guitar, and can help time pass.

yes, of the many thought processes going on in my head all the time. some are songs i've heard or songs i haven't coming from somewhere. it used to be hard to focus on just 1 or 2 trains of thought at a time until i rewired my brain and the way i think in my 30's. i still rarely focus on just 1 thing at a time, but i don't waste brain power on things that don't mean anything to me.
i rarely put much thought into anything except my personal relationships.
ba: obscured - smashing pumpkins
ba2: trouble - cat stevens
