task manager question?
Even before I open any programs at all if I hit ctrl+alt+delete I see there are MANY programs in the task manager list. I know that can't all be pertinent. How can I safely tell which ones I can shut off so I stop getting warnings from Norton about low resources.
Thanks!
It is a current version of Norton.
Sey, I don't know which ones I can safely turn off.

See if you can boot into safe mode then follow the steps below to place your computer in “clean boot”
· Click the Start on your Desktop
· Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
· On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
· Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
· Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
· Click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart. Are you still getting that low resource message?
If this does resolve the issue, then see the following Microsoft Article on “Clean boot” and the section “How to determine what is causing the problem” to determine which program or service maybe causing the issue. (See Sources 1)
How to set your computer back, to boot normal:
· Click the Start on your Desktop
· In the Start Search box. Type msconfig, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
Click the General tab.
· Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
· When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
Hope this will fix it for you.

Repost 2:
I don't know if any of the running processes should be turned off. You have to check each one, but unless you know what you're doing, don't mess with them. You can check the ones that are using a lot of system resources, which I'm betting Norton is one of them. Most anti-virus and firewall programs use a lot of resources. Some, however, start automatically and stay on for no reason. The link below can be used to check running processes. Remember too, some programs are set to start automatically, unless the program settings are changed.

I have about 22 processes running right now. If you want to get a better picture of your running processes and programs, go to Filehippo.com and download Process Explorer and Autoruns. Both are free. Did you say Norton was telling you about low resources? Norton's reputation has always been one of a resource hog. How much RAM do you have installed? Any number of programs can suck down RAM including the Firefox browser.

Most of the tasks listed will not actually be running at the time you look. Only the ones that show a number under the CPU column are actually running. The rest are simply listed as having used memory at some time -- mostly at start-up. So just ignore them. If you are getting warnings of low resources, try running the disc cleaner, then re-start your computer.

If Norton is out of date and you don't use it, unistall it from your computer, and install something like Avast! Free Antivirus, or Malwarebytes.
If not, then you should see what it's saying is running that is dangerous, and end that certain process.

on task manager click processes and choose the program you want to terminate then click end process.
