taking a year off after high school to travel?

hey everyone, I'm a senior in high school right now. Im about to graduate in 3 weeks. I really would like to travel for a little bit, maybe even re-locate myself to another country for a few years. I guess you could say I've had a rough childhood, and i really just would like to get away fro a little bit. I have a job lined up in a few weeks, and i'll probably do that until maybe september. But i wanna be outta the US and either in a tropical place where i can surf, or in canada where i can go snowboarding and see how they live up there. I would like to save up maybe 2 or 3 thousand dollars then just go. I will be getting my passport this summer. Do you guys think this would be a good idea? I want to go to college too, but ive been in school my whole life so far, and I'd really like to take a break for a year or two. I wanna go to college for sociology so i think this would also help me, so i can get a better understanding of viewpoints of people from other countries.

Any input or any suggestions of what i should do would be helpful - thanks!

Canadians live pretty much the same way as Americans...

    Anyways,

Make sure you know exactly how much it will cost you to take a few years off school. It's more than some people think. You might want to think about just finishing college, and then moving somewhere cool to work.

If all you really want to do is get out of the U.S., why not go to a Canadian college? Just a thought.

Maybe it would be better to just get college over with. The 1 or 2 years you take off could turn into 3, 4, etc.

    Source(s): Just my opinion.

First, as you said you'll need a passport. Get started on that *now* because it could take a few weeks or up to a couple of months depending on the work backlog of the state department. You can pay more for faster service, but you're on a limited budget. You have more time than money, so do this now.

Second, you'll need a visa stamp in your passport given to you by the country you want to enter. Every country's rules are different. You'll need to do some online research for the most up to date information.

For each country, get information and rules on their tourist visa, student visa, and work visa. A tourist visa is typically the easiest to get, but have shorter time limits. If you want to study while you're there, you'll need a student visa. If you want to work while you're there, you'll need some kind of work visa. Those can extend your stay a lot longer but are more difficult to get. Unless you're sponsored by an employer and get yourself thru a lengthy application process, most countries won't let you work (legally) while you're there, and your $3k won't last long.

The easiest example is a tourist visa into Canada. You basically go to Canada and you can get a visa at the airport when you land. Many other countries let you do this too: UK, EU countries, Australia/NZ, etc.

What can be more difficult is that some countries require you to get with their consulate here in the US to get a visa before you even leave the US (India, China). If you don't have a visa, you cannot get past Passport Control and you'll have to fly home.
