One example was found in Book XII when Odysseus's crew was nearing the land of the sirens. Odysseus knew beforehand that the sirens are deadly at the same time wise when Circe warned him of the Sirens and their capabilities before she let him and his crew leave her island. When you hear the Sirens's song and manage not to succumb to their temptations, you would be wise beyond measure. Odysseus wanted the valuable wisdom only for himself so he told his crew to plug with ears so they wouldn't hear the songs and made them tie him to the ship's mast so he wouldn't be able to jump overboard as he hears the siren's song. The crew was ignorant of Odysseus's intentions of keeping the knowledge and wisdom only for himself.
