Can 2 players from different continents play together on PSN?

My friend, currently living in Malaysia, is getting a PS3.

He's getting a PS3 from there and his games are all coming from there.

I'm currently living in the UK, and my PS3 and all it's games are from here.

Will we be able to play online together without any region restrictions? I know there are region restrictions for games, but are there any for online play?

I fairly often play against Americans and Europeans. And i live in Australia.

There are some things you should know though.

The game lags more when playing across continents.

And the server usually prioritizes local to local since it'll be a better connection. But you still can play against others that are in another country if you get an invite from the other person.

You will be able to add him to PSN, and then invite him into a match where you want to play.
