It's USB or Ethernet Cable. Most of the DSL modem are using Ethernet cable while most of Cable modem can use either USB or Ethernet cable to connect to a PC.

But if you want to connect to a router/wireless router, then it has to be Ethernet cable.

A Coaxial Cable, Ethernet Cable, and NIC are necessary to connect a modem to a computer.

    (standard setup)

Coaxial Cable --> Modem --> Ethernet Cable --> NIC

(same thing but with a router)

Coaxial Cable --> Modem --> Ethernet Cable --> Router --> Ethernet Cable --> NIC

    (special exception)

Coaxial Cable --> Modem with USB supported network capabilities --> USB Cable --> USB plug on Computer.
