where is milkyway on new 3 d map of universe?

Does anyone know a link that identifies where the milkyway is on the new 3d map of the universe. I have tried some searching and have not been able to find a "We are here sign." Seriously, I am very curious and I can't believe I'm the only one.

Know exactly what you're talking about.

"You've never seen the universe like this before. Astronomers on Wednesday unveiled the most complete 3D map of the local universe, covering a distance of 380 million light-years, ever created.

This giant, 3D atlas of the sky called the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) was amassed from over a decade of observation and measurements by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). It was created using near-infrared light, which penetrates intervening dust, allowing astronomers to see more of the sky, and by measuring redshifts."

Did I say it was perfect? Nope. Either we will eventually develop ways to see through and decode the interference of the Milky Way's "waist-band", or we will have to develop a propulsion system to get us up and perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy, and at least at near light speed to do us any good, time-wise. This is a map based on present data from present technology, maybe best desribed as a crude prototype. But, it's not that bad.

In all the maps of the universe they've made, the milky way is always in the center. It's not because we're at the center of the universe of course, but that is the perspective from which we view the universe.

  • Since we are in the Milky Way Galaxy, the view of the universe we see is partially obstructed by the Milky Way. It is represented by the horizontal black area stretching across the center of the map.

Note this statement in the web site a previous responder posted.

"In this projection, the plane of the Milky Way runs horizontally across the center of the image."
