Where to holiday in Canada?

I am looking at holidays for next year for my wife and I, we're from UK and I'm thinking Canada this time round. Never been before. We're not really into partying, night life etc. but do enjoy getting involved with the culture, such as art and local food. Don't really want to be a the city centre, or equally don't want to be in the wilderness, maybe somewhere in between, with a nice family owned hotel or bed & breakfast with plenty to see an do in the day. Length of holiday will be about 10 nights.

I'm initially thinking around the Lakes, Toronto area, but does anyone have any other suggestions? (ideally sticking to the east coast!)

Good choices might be Ottawa... it's not a big as Toronto yet has tons of museums, nearby historical sites, parliament buildings, and is closer to a lot more lakes and resorts than Toronto.

Victoria British Columbia might be an alternative. Longer flights, but it is also smaller than Toronto, lots of cultural locations, and it close to Vancouver, the ocean, mountains, and lots of lakes and resorts up island.

Maritimes is another place to consider. Some place like Halifax and then tour through several of the provinces. Not as many larger museums, but lots of parks, scenery, and historic sites.

One thing I will mention is that Canada is big. Don't plan on parking yourself in any one place. Many of the best places and be a good distance away from the cities, so best way is to plan a route with several stopping places in-between and things you want to see. If you can try using methods of transportation which allow you to see things on the way. Car rental is typically the best way, but buses, trains, and ferries can be alternatives if you don't like driving.

I suggest checking out the Rockie Mountains in eastern BC. I recommend Cranbrook. It's a beautiful little city.

    Source(s): I grew up there.
