    1. His masterwork _The Great Gatsby_ has come to define America in a certain way: its trust in the self made man, the mixture of romantic aspiration and financial achievement, its elegiac feel for its past, and its idealization of the notion of promise and limitless possibility. He was the artist of the 1920's, and his own life seems as spectacular as his work, so that as a writer he seems as American and tragic as his best books, _The Great gatsby_ and _Tender is the Night_ (and about a dozen short stories).

He is, intermittently, a great literary artist.

    2. Some of this is answered n #1. The Gatsby lifestyle, the elegance, lavishness, profligate spending, and idealization of glamor and the glamorous woman is now iconic. The charm and romantic splendor that he and his best writing embody are pervasive in American writing and more generally in the culture as well.
