Excellent question! You will find the long answer to this in the book "Conversations with God" - get it here: http://astore.amazon.com/wwwnealedonal-20/detail/0...

Basically, the bible contains a great deal of truth. But due to religion and human nature, the teachings in the bible have been polluted with power, greed what the religious teachers of the time deemed "appropriate." Most of the writers of the new testament never even knew Jesus. The transcribed stories were passed down from person to person. Some of the scriptures were even made up to keep people in line. Conversations with God has a lot to say about the devil too.... like he/she doesn't exist.

God fearing is a male dominated, fear & control based concept that runs rife through our religions today. God does not want us to fear him/her, god knows only love and wants us to know only love. God does not know judgement punishment or retribution either. God is love.

Fear spoken of in the Bible is more healthy respect and not actual trembling in fear.

If you are doing what you are suppose to then you absolutely should not fear God. In fact, there are verses after verses that say you should not fear.

Those that know they arent doing what they are suppose to really dont fear God, but the consequences of not doing what they know will benefit them in the long run.

If you believe in God and have an understanding of his love for you, then you naturally will respect God. That is what God wants. He wants your love and respect because if you love and respect him then you will do what he knows will make you the best person you can possibly be, which is to become like him.

Fear God was an Old Testament thing when the devils controlled mankind on Earth. Fear was introduced then to help mankind fight/resist evil temptation. The New Testament gets rid of the devils thus tells "love/worship God."

That is the King James Version. Like many works from 400 years ago, "fear" has changed it's meaning. Modern translations use the word respect, or words similar to that. We should respect God, and/or be in awe of Him, but being afraid is NOT what that phase means.

The fear of God is righteousness. When you acknowledge Gods power and if you love him, you will do whatever pleases him because you love him and he shares that love with you. Those who fear God love God.

Those who dont fear God dispise and deny God. They deny his power and arent afraid of his judgment. There are some Christians who do not fully fear God, because those who fear God keep his commands.

there is no English equalivalent. It is a word meaning an "AWE" of God. It is a very high respect including the aspect of "fear" of opposing Him.

To fear God means simply to understand that He is more powerful than any man or animal. He holds the fate of your soul. Whether you will die and feel peace, or pain.

The fear is more of a respect, when we realize what God is capable of, and how absolutely his power his, then we can truly respect him.

It's like when a kid loves his father, but fears him.
