    ppm= parts per million (10^-6)

    one tonne of air = 1000 kg = 1,000,000g

    2*10^-3 g of carbon = 0.002g of carbon

    mass(carbon) / mass(air) = 0.002g / 1,000,000g = 0.000000002 = 0.002ppm = 2*10^-3ppm
