IndyCar to run Motegi road course?

The news was made official to the public this morning, IndyCar will run on the road course at Twin Ring Motegi this season instead of the egg shaped oval, which was damaged in the massive earthquake that struck the country this spring. Work has been done to the oval to try to repair it, but the sustained damage was too severe. By the time IICS gets to Japan, the road course will have been repaved. This adjustment to the schedule now favors road courses 10:7 compared to the ovals. What is your reaction?

I have never seen cars running on the road course (outside of Gran Turismo), so I had to look up SuperGT races on YouTube. I have to say it looks GREAT. It'll be cool to see these cars running on the course, which has several places to pass, making it an aggressive drivers dream. Should be a great race, can't wait!

It will be interesting to see if the Indy cars will be faster than the Formula Nippon cars who race the road course. FN cars have engines running at 50 HP less than an IndyCar Dallara but also weigh about 200 pounds less than the Dallara in road course configuration. Right now, those in the know expect the most recent FN lap times to actually be slightly faster than IndyCar. If IndyCar ends up being slower than a national feeder series, that won't be good, even though it is only a one race deal as Motegi is off the 2012 schedule.

BTW, the switch will automatically cost Honda more money as the Dallara in road course config weighs about 70 pounds more than when it is in oval config. Assuming that most teams will ship a full car and backup and that spare parts will weigh more for roads vs ovals and there might be about 2 tons more of weight for Honda to cover both ways.

Personally not a big fan of the road courses. I used to go to Chicagoland every year so imagine my disappointment when they got rid of it. But besides that it should be interesting to watch. I never favored the Motegi oval too much but the road course is a very good track. Should be fun
