There's usually not any requirements, outside of not having any health problems or physical handicaps that would prevent you from cutting apart cars, carrying heavy equipment, etc.

Unless you live in a big city, you should be able to find a volunteer fire department near by you can join. They usually provide free training in return for your volunteer time.

If there's no volunteer squads nearby or you don't want to spend that time, you can pay to take the classes (usually at a local community college). If you're looking to make a career out of it, you'll need at least a few years on a squad, and more than likely extensive emergency medical experience. You should try to get a paramedic certification and as many firefighter certifications as possible: interior firefighter I and II, hazmat, etc.

You need to complete a course in firefighting and will need to be so fit and flexible in order to cut through steel, cars, etc. to rescue people, pets, etc. You will also need a certificate to signify that you are qualified in that job.

    Good luck!
