What is the best possible CPU for socket 775?

Technically that would be the Xeon server processors, but for a desktop market you'll be best off with a Core 2 Quad Extreme. I believe the QX9770 is the best but it's very pricey, you could get a better CPU for less money if you got a LGA1155 motherboard (although obviously that'd be more expensive when ou factor in Mobo cost)

I am under the impression that not all 775 socket CPU's will run in all 775 socket motherboards. Or a BIOS update might be needed to do so. Best thing to do would be to research the specific motherboard you have and find a CPU Compatibility List. That list would probably indicate if a BIOS update is needed to run some of them too.
