what could cause this pain?
When I sleep on my left side I wake up with very intense pain at the bottom of my ribcage. I did have fractured ribs 7 months ago. I also wake up coughing mucus up and have a hard time breathing.

Haha I had the same problems as you before, but this is what I found out
Drinking and eating too much dairy products like milk, cheese and chocolate create a lot of mucus (snot) that builds up on your lungs and body total. Your body is trying to cough it up in an attempt to get rid of that built up flem and snot.
The solution could be to stop taking dairy for a time, or lessen the amount you eat or drink. Try drinking raw, juiced vegetables or fruits to heal yourself up man. Jack Lalanne style.
Also, I had internal bruising in my ribs after a car accident and often slept on my side. The solution for me was to support my ribs with something very soft, or to try and sleep in some other way till it healed up properly.
I've been drinking a lot of vegetables and fruits so my body is in pretty good condition. Acupressure (deep massage, focusing on pressure points) under the feet in also extremely good for blood circulation. Helps the juice work better in your body.

Well, you shouldn't sleep on that side.At least that would hopefully prevent you from waking up with such severe pain.
And,I also suggest that you see your primary doctor for the proper diagnoses, and possible treatment(s).
As I said....don't sleep on that side(left side),seeing how you continue to wake up in severe pain. And,see your primary doctor for the proper diagnoses/treatment(s).
Hope this helps.
Take care.
