How do I remove blood at home?

I want to remove blood to lower my iron levels but donation isn't an option because I was disqualified. The blood bank will still draw blood but they charge $100 and require a prescription, which seems expensive for poking a hole in me and letting my blood drain. What materials would I need to do it myself? A 16g or 18g needle and some kind of tubing?

Any phlebotomists out there with experience in this?

Medical insurance should cover therapeutic phlebotomy.

Please do not try to do this at home. Phlebotomy is not easy and it requires quite a bit of training and safety considerations to do it properly. You risk infection, phlebitis, nerve damage, air embolism and any number of other injuries you could cause yourself. Also, exactly where would you dispose of the blood you collected? Blood is considered hazardous medical waste and must be disposed of accordingly. The supplies required and medical waste disposal fees would likely cost you just as much as paying the blood center. And you would still need to see the doctor to get a prescription for the phlebotomy supplies-I don't think a doctor would ever consider writing a script in this situation.

If you don't have insurance and can't afford the phlebotomy treatments, speak to the doctor who diagnosed your condition, the director of the blood bank, and any national support groups for your condition. There may be programs to help you pay for the treatment, or an alternative facility that can perform the phlebotomies (you will still need a prescription) such as a University Hospital with a sliding fee scale.
