Traditional names vs current trends?

Explain why you want a current trended name more that the traditional names like Mike, John, Steve, etc. My children will be going to school with kids that have names I have no hope of spelling unless they spell it for me. I want to understand why their parents chose to do that.

Update:

Cute, Allysa & Cloe's mamma but why did you choose these names?

Update 2:

Sorry I really messed up the spelling s/be Alyssa and Chloe.

I think I can spell Liam right.

Update 3:

I have never heard of Kacey for a girl though I did have a rabbit named Casey (male). So I obviously like the name :)

My children will be going to Catholic school with Mark, John, Luke, and Paul. I think they will be just fine with their popular current names. Alyssa was in the top 20 in 2007 and Chloe was in the top 20 for 2010 yet somehow I think you will manage to spell their names.

Edit: My husband and I went through hundreds of names until we decided on one for each child. The popularity of the name honestly had no influence on the name we chose. I have no guilt for not naming my children Elizabeth and Catherine though.

We want to impress others with how creative we are.

Some years back, I read a study on how unusual names affected the kids who had them.

Boys had the hardest time, took the most ribbing, when they had unusual names.

Other kids seemed to be more tolerant of girls having unusual names.

It is probably best to pick a name from the current top 10, if you have your child's social adjustment as a priority. Best for the child, but more important if it's a boy than if it's a girl.

You aren't distinguishing from "traditional" names to "boring and common" names.

    I absolutely adore traditional names.

Like Alice, Grace, Evelyn, Madeleine, Florence, Rose, etc etc

Boring and common names; not so much.

Like Debbie, Sharon, Karen, Susan, Linda, Steve, Mike, etc etc

And I absolutely hate 'trendy' names.

Like Neveah, Destinii, Aliyanyiah, etc etc

So I'm not really sure what question I'm answering or whether I answered it but you have to distinguish between traditional, boring, and trendy.

I think the best names are traditional names - why else would they have made it into tradition if they weren't great?!

I tend to avoid boring names. But even more so I want to avoid 'trendy' names. They're so hideous they make my ears hurt!

I think that traditional names are more popular names now than unusual ones now. I personally have children with unusual first names but "old classic" middle names. I think it all depends on what parents are into some unusual names do look illiterate and should have never been invented but if thats what they like then oh well.

firstly, i have a name that is some what unusual for the UK and i have always been proud of it.

I chose the name Kacey for my daughter, as over here the name is traditional but not stuffy and over used so it feels like it has a more modern edge.

i think people who chose really flamboyant, over the top names are just basically attention seekers

I understand what you mean; names bristling with Ys, invented or mutated names that have no bearing on reality or the well being of spell checkers, gender benders, or just random cities and every day items doubling as children's names. I have to say I favor names with meaning and history to any of the above.

I like traditional names for girls.Very classy names. For guys its either or. I can never find a name I really like for a boy besides Liam. I hate people with "unique" names. They take a beautiful simple name, add letters, take letters away, then you can't even say the name!
