Question about respiration reaction?

Isn't this question invalid? A question on my sisters biology test was as follows: Which element is not used in photosynthesis or respiration? 4 answer choices: oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen. Aren't all of them used at some point? If I recall denitrification is a form of respiration done by some microbes. NO3-+2e-+2H -----> NO2- +H2O is the reduction of nitrate to nitride (the cycle can continue until N gas is released, and it is broken down completely) if I remember my bio class some bacteria can do it (excuse misspellings) pseudomonas stutzen, Arigonsia, rhodobauter sphanelis. Someone please confirm or disprove my theory that all are (can be) used.

You're groping at straws here. I agree that it's not a real great question. However, If this is a general biology class question the obvious answer is N.

Don't make a pain in the a&s of yourself for a couple of extra points on a general bio. test, it's not worth the trouble. Save your pseudomonas's & rhod.., whatever, for higher level bio. courses, if they're ever taken by sis.

    Butt out.

i think that is an absurd question. to say that ANY of those are not "used" in the process is saying that no proteins are involved in the process. even though the teacher was probably just talking about the chemical equation that is a totally ambiguous question and i would agree that there is no correct answer. i would however also argue that even though there is not "correct" answer, if you knew what you were talking about, you would have gotten it correct, because you would have known what the test was on and what the teacher really meant.

conclusion: if your sis got it wrong, that's her problem if she put one of the other answers, she deserves to lose points.

when options r given, we r supposed to answer one among them. we have to exclude exceptional facts. so generally speaking about photosynthesis and respiration, nitrogen will not involve in the aforementioned processes.

so nitrogen is the appropriate answer for the question u mentioned.

The answer is nitrogen. The most common equation for respiration is: C6H12O6 + 6O2 -----> 6CO2 + 6H2O

Photosynthesis: same equation, the other way around (as it is used to make food instead of energy).

One electron delivery method happens within the cristae of the mitochondria, wherein a sequence of cytochromes (telephone pigments) and coenzymes exist. These cytochromes and coenzymes act as provider molecules and switch molecules. They take delivery of top-power electrons and cross the electrons to the following molecule within the method The electrons lose power as they cross down the electron delivery method. Some of this power is used to pump protons (hydrogen ions) into the outer compartment of the mitochondrion. In this manner we construct up a proton gradient.
