Ceiling fan wiring question...?

It looks as if I have two sets of black/ white wires coming into the ceiling fan box at the ceiling. I set is attached to the wall switch and I am assuming the other is a set used to hot wire the fan. My question is where do I connect all of the wires? The fan has green (ground), white (neutral), black (fan), and blue (light).

I tried switch black to blue, "hot black" (no wall switch) to black for fan and all neutrals together, and ground of course. This got the fan working the way I wanted but the light isn't working.

Help?

It is possible that the one set of black and white is the switch leg. The white of this set would be connected to the black hot wire along with the fan to feed the switch. The black from this set would be connected to the blue for the fan light from the switch. Take a look at the switch to see if it has a white and a black connected to it.

Was there a fan there before? If not then you probably wont be able to use the switch to control the fan. (And if there wasn't a fan there before then the junction box is probably not UL listed and code acceptable to have a fan from it).

Your two sets of wire are probably a hot and a switch loop, look at the picture shown http://www.crsupport.us/images/143-2.jpg

If this is the scenario you could wire the light to the switch as shown (do not connect the blacks together, then you would have two whites at the light), then control the fan with the pull chain by connecting the black from the fan to the hot from the power source.

You are in need of a volt meter to tell you what you have when the switch is on and when its off....Harbor Tool Sells useable one for about $20.00....That is one of the bad thing about a wire ..A "Wire" can't be looked at and tell whats there
