Skaters: How do you pay for your skating?

Just out of curiosity, how do you pay for coaching, ice time, outfits, etc?

I'm lucky; I'm an only child and my parents are fine with paying for everything. However, I decided that I would rather them pay for university and school and all of that, so I teach Canskate in exchange for Ice time, and I work at camp during the summer and I have a part time job at a pet store during the year to pay for outfits and coaching. Of course, my parents still have to pay for a lot of stuff, but I feel good having contributed as much as I can.

So how do you other competitive skater pay for your skating?

I was lucky like you but my parents never had much money so I always felt guilty letting them pay for it!!

Then as soon as I turned 16 and got a job I have payed for all my skating!

I think the last thing they payed for was my skates as they are so expensive!

I am now 20 and I also have to pay for my car and petrol so I don't skate as much as I want to :(

My job pays well so its ok but it is still part time.

I think it makes you a lot more independent and able to keep hold of your money better.

Well done you for doing that and I hope you go far in skating :)

I am the middle child with an older brother and a younger brother. So the problem is not really paying for skating, it's getting me to the rink. My older brother is a runner who doesn't really have much of an off season and my younger brother is one of those kids who plays 3 different sports at once. My dad also works pretty long hours and I don't live near anyone to carpool, but we have great skating moms who come way out of their way to pick me up and take me to skating. I do feel kind of guilty sometimes for things like competitions and new skates that I know cost a lot, so I try not to ask my parents for much because of skating.

I'm kind of lucky but unlucky. My direct family is pretty poor, I have a single mum and 2 little brothers, my mum only works casual so she can't pay for much of my skating. She pays for one of my lessons per week and for my travel (I live about 1 and 1/2 hours from the rink and I have to catch the train there...at 5am -_-).

My dad is also poor, and pretty much wastes any money he gets. But luckily, my dad comes from a rich family (he's just sort of...the bad egg) so my grandparents help pay for most of my skating costs.

I'm 14, so in a few months time I'll be able to get a job and help cover some of the costs. I already pay for all my skates, costumes and any accessories out of birthday money (and loose change, and any pocket money I get...).

    I'm also a fulltime student.

So I work my butt off at university, then at the ice rink and the gym during the week, and then I spend all weekend working a lot of hours at a hardware store. That's how I pay for my skating. My parents contribute nothing and I wouldn't ask them to.

Well my family are quite well off so i don't have to pay for anything. I'm also 14 so i cant really get a job. What i do id save up all my pocket money and i payed for half of my skates, and all of my skate bag and stuff like that but my parents pay for all my lessons and ice time and travel so i guess i get it quite easy but i do feel guilt so when i'm 16 i think will get a job

I'm fortunate enough to have a family with enough money to pay for extra things, like skating, so my parents pay for everything, except sometimes I help pay for part of my dresses, as my mom won't spend over $100 on a dress, and I'll pay half or something. But that only happens like, once a year.
