  • Is there any way to watch past TV online including previews?

Basically, I may have been on TV on Wednesday on Sunrise (Australian show) for an ice skating thing, but it was live so I didn't get to see it. I looked on their website but they only put up this thing called "Sunrise Extra" in which they show the highlights. What I was on was a weather cross, but it was the preview for the weather cross (you know, the part where they show "Coming up next..." etc.

So I was wondering, is there any way to access the full episode online or otherwise? I really want to see it! (Sorry if this question sounds ridiculous, it's okay if it can't be done - I'm not very good with technology!).

    Thanks, all help appreciated! :)

  • Layback spin/breathing question?

This might seem like a bit of a weird question, but do you breathe when you do a layback spin? And if so, how?

I'm working on my layback, and I can get into the position easily and get around 4-5 revolutions, but after that I run out of breath and have to abort the spin. I've tried breathing as I'm spinning but for some reason I have trouble exhaling when I'm in that position. I can breathe easily in all my other spins - even my haircutter. It's just the layback.

By the way, I don't have any breathing problems usually (no asthma, etc.).

So, does anyone else have this problem? Is there a special way of breathing, do you have to learn to hold your breath, or does it just take getting used to?

    Thanks! :)

  • Skaters: How to stop popping jumps?

Basically, I've had my axel consistent for about 6 months. But a week ago, all of a sudden, I lost it almost completely! No idea what's wrong, as it was still solid the day before that.

Anyway, the main problem I have is that I always pop it. That makes me think it's all mental. And what's even more annoying is that whenever I DO go for the jump and actually rotate, I can land it just fine, and I pretty much never fall or mess up the ones that I actually do. However, on average I pop about 9/10 of my axels.

I have a competition tomorrow, it will be my last comp for the year and I really, REALLY want to get a personal best. I'm supposed to do an axel and an axel-loop combination, but obviously if I pop them, I'll get zero for them. I've had a problem with popping my jumps since one of my comps last month when I popped one axel, and since then it's become a really bad habit :(

So, do you have any tips on getting over these silly mental problems? My coach tells me to just go for the jump, but I just get a stupid irrational fear when I step into it!

Thanks in advance, all answers appreciated.

  • Solving quadratic equations by completing the square?

Firstly, I just want to say I am NOT trying to cheat on homework or anything - this is one of many exercises in my textbook and I could easily copy from the answers if I wanted to, but I want to thoroughly understand it.

    3x^2+12x-5=0

The answer I got was (+-√16/9)/2 but that was not the correct answer. The actual answer was (-6+-√51)/3.

So (if you can even understand me...) could someone please explain to me how to do questions like this, step by step? Thank you, answers much appreciated.

  • Which of these dresses should I wear in my comp?

I have a competition this weekend, then another one next weekend (:S) and I just realized I haven't chosen a dress to wear yet! So I'd really appreciate it if you would take a look at my album below and tell me:

    1. Which dress/es do you think matches my music the most?

    2. Which one do you think is the prettiest? (just as a matter of interest..)

I know I have a lot of dresses by the way, it's because my step aunt's cousin or something used to skate, so she gave me a bunch of dresses. I'm going to sell some on eBay soon, just haven't gotten around to it...

    The dresses:

    http://s1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee484/skating7...

    My music:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovO2od-Wr1Q

Also, I numbered each dress so you don't have to go to the effort of describing it or anything, haha. I also have another dress which is purple and silver. I have darkish brown hair, quite fair skin, and umm if it's relevant my program is around axel level... Oh, and I'm aware some of the dresses do not match my music whatsoever, I just thought I'd take pictures of them anyway.

    Thanks for answering! <3

I know it's fairly long, as you can probably tell I have waaaay too much time on my hands... :)

  • What skates should I get?

Well, the time has come for me to get new skates...

I'm currently working on axel (it's almost consistent), double salchow and double loop, flying camel, flying sit and layback spin. I'm 14, and about 55kg (don't know lbs, sorry) and I'm tall (175cm or so). I'm a pretty fast learner, I've only been skating for about 10 or 11 months, so I want my skates to last me a while. I have pretty average shaped feet... The skates I've been considering are: (there's so many choices!!)

    -Risport Excellence

    -Riedell 435TS

    -Edea chorus

    -GAM ultra

    -Jackson Elite

And for blades I'm thinking either JW coronation ace or comet or Ultima Protege or Legacy

Do any of you have any opinions on which skates I should get?? Do you think my options are reasonable for my level? I don't really have much of a budget but I want them as inexpensive as possible (at the moment I have about $600 saved up :P but I have a flexible budget). And suggestions/experiences with any of these?

    Thanks, and happy skating :D

  • Do you think this dress suits this music?

    http://i.ebayimg.com/07/!BrohcrgBmk~$%28KGrHqMH-D0... <<The dress

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rmG9IY2FAE <<The music

Do you think this dress would be a good choice for my program? It's a sort of tango-ish program..If not, do you have any other dress suggestions?

    Thanks :)

  • What is this piece of music called?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITFAZ6dOPFU

In this video ^^ does anyone know what the name of the music that starts at 2:20 is called?? It's the music in the second half of the program because the program is made up of two pieces.

    Thanks :D

  • Does anyone know what this spin is called?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wM4ENGaIbA

^^The last spin in the combination at the end (at roughly 3:38 minutes). She does a sit spin then gets up and sort of droops her body forward. Hard to explain, so just watch the video! Does anyone know what this spin is called? I've seen it done by a girl at my rink but I'm not sure if it has a name.

  • Which riedell skates should I get?

I'm 14, 54kg (roughly 120lbs) and 170cm (roughly 5'7"). I am working on getting my axel consistent (I land it about 50% of the time) and starting doubles. I'm working on my layback and beginning flying camel. It's nearly time for me to get new skates, and I think I'm going to get riedell. Do you think I should get the 435TS of 1310LS? Have you had any experience with these skates? If they aren't good, what other skates would you recommend? Also, are riedell for narrow or wide feet? My feet are fairly average sized, a bit on the narrow side. Thanks!

P.S. Also, for blades I'm thinking either coronation ace or coronation comet. Opinions? Suggestions? Thank youu =]

  • Am I doing well for skating 7 months?

I have been skating for roughly 7 and a half months. I skate twice a week (3 times if I'm lucky, as the rink is 1.5 hours away from where I live), about 3 hours in total. I have been taking one half-hour group lesson a week for 6 months, and one private lesson a week for almost two months. I am in australian freeskate 4 (not sure what this is in america) but I can also do things higher than my level.

I have my: waltz jump, salchow, toe loop, loop, flip, lutz and most combinations, just started learning AXEL, two foot spin, one foot spin, crossfoot/scratch spin, sit spin, camel spin (it really sucks though!), catchfoot spin, spirals (both ways and edges), crossovers, mohawks, 3-turns, etc. I know I'm no Johnny Weir, lol, but do you think I'm doing at least okay for how long I've been skating?

I had never ice skated before late March this year. I was okay at rollerblading though..

  • What is the difference between a catchfoot and a one-handed biellmann?

Is it the way you grab the blade?? Or is the foot higher than the head in biellmann, or...? Haha, I had a disagreement with a friend about whether her catchfoot was actually a biellmann or not, so I want to know how to tell the difference between the two..

BONUS QUESTION: is it ok for the free leg to be a bit bent in a sit spin? Because my coach said its okay, but then my friend said the free leg should be as straight as possible..I guess I should listen to my coach, lol, but I was just wondering anyway..

  • When should I get new skates? And what skates should I get?

At the moment I have jackson freestyle skates with Mark IV blade. I've had them for about 4-5 months. I'm a fairly fast learner, and I can currently do all single jumps but axel (and still working on getting lutz more consistent) and on good days i can do loop-loop and flip-loop combinations. With my spins I'm working on camel, camel-sit combination, and sit spin variations and some other stuff. I've been skating for a total of 5 and a half months approx. I'm about 54 kg (not sure how much that is in lbs, i think about 120?) and 171cm. And I've been doing loops and flips for about 2/3 months. I have been skating 1-2 times a week (as I live 1.5 hours away from the rink) but I will hopefully increase that to 3 times a week. About 4-5 hours in total, including one group and one private lesson (but I've only been doing private lessons for 3 weeks). Oh, and I'm 13, not sure if I'm still growing or not..So my questions are...:

Are my skates right for my level?

When approximately should I get new skates and/or how can I tell when my skates have worn out?

What skates should I get when I do get new ones? (I want to start saving up now, lol).

Should I stick with Jacksons or try a different brand? Riedell or Edea/Risport maybe? I have fairly normal width feet. I'm pretty happy with my jacksons at the moment, but that could just be because I've never had any other brand to compare them too..

    Thanks in advance :)

  • Is 2 weeks long enough to prepare for a competition?

I've been skating for about 5 months. I've been taking group lessons and now I'm about to start private. My coach wants me to go in a club competition on august 1st which is only 2 weeks away. She said we can put together a program in my lesson on Monday..but I only have one private lesson a week. So that means only 2 20 minute lessons to prepare. I'm pretty sure it has to be 1 minute 30 seconds long, and in my level the requirementd are only one foot spins, spirals, waltz jumps etc which is easy for me as I'm landing flips and loops in practice. I'm pretty sure I

can't book an extra lesson as my coach is very popular so she has a full schedule. And I'll only be able to practice 3-4 times a week maximum as the rink is 1.5 hours away. There's another club comp on 19th September...do you think I should do the competition on august 1st (to gain the experience?) or just wait until September? P.S I'm 13 and have never competed before

  • How to get lower in my sit spin?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s46SrQiqlPM

This is what my sit spin looks like now ^^ (believe it or not, it used to be even worse than this...)

What exercises should I be doing off ice (I already do a few one foot and two foot squats, but is there anything else that will help?) to have a lower sit spin? And is there anything I'm doing wrong? I've only been practising this for a few weeks, so I might just need to practice more, but still...

    Thanks! :)

  • Should I get a transpack bag?

Ok, so I'm sick of using my dorky school bag to carry my skates to the rink :) and I'm thinking about getting a transpack. I was looking at zuca at first but I decided that it's too expensive, and any rolling suitcase type bag would be inconvenient for me (to get to the rink I have to catch a train, catch a bus, and then walk the rest of the way. All together it takes about an hour and a half).

So now I'm looking at a transpack bag (if you aren't familiar with it, it's this: https://www.discountskatewear.com/p-68-transpack-s...

It seems reasonably priced. If you have used it, is this a good bag? Does it fit lots of stuff in it?

    Thanks!

  • A few figure skating questions...?

I am 13, turning 14 in August. I'm about 170cm (I think thats about 5"7) tall and I weigh about 54kg (119lbs). I've been skating about 3 months, and I'm currently working on single jumps, so not that difficult yet. Do you think I'm too tall or heavy for figure skating? I mean when I get to doubles and stuff. Even if I am supposedly too tall, I'm not going to let that stop me. I love skating too much for that :)

Oh, and also do you think I'm making good progress? I started skating mid-February (but I have been inline figure skating on snow whites for about 8 months), I ice skate once a week, sometimes twice. I've landed my waltz jump, toe loop, salchow, and almost loop, and I can do two-foot spin, one-foot, scratch, sit spin and working on camel. I've taught myself all this, but don't start lecturing me about getting lessons because I do take lessons, but so far they're only teaching me the basics (coz of all the compulsory levels and tests I have to take. Like, I got moved up four levels, so now we're doing 3-turns in lessons, but still very easy).

I hope to have landed an axel by the end of the year...do you think this a good goal, or too ambitious?

    Thanks :P
