Skaters: How to stop popping jumps?
Basically, I've had my axel consistent for about 6 months. But a week ago, all of a sudden, I lost it almost completely! No idea what's wrong, as it was still solid the day before that.
Anyway, the main problem I have is that I always pop it. That makes me think it's all mental. And what's even more annoying is that whenever I DO go for the jump and actually rotate, I can land it just fine, and I pretty much never fall or mess up the ones that I actually do. However, on average I pop about 9/10 of my axels.
I have a competition tomorrow, it will be my last comp for the year and I really, REALLY want to get a personal best. I'm supposed to do an axel and an axel-loop combination, but obviously if I pop them, I'll get zero for them. I've had a problem with popping my jumps since one of my comps last month when I popped one axel, and since then it's become a really bad habit :(
So, do you have any tips on getting over these silly mental problems? My coach tells me to just go for the jump, but I just get a stupid irrational fear when I step into it!

It's a completely psychological problem. Your subconscious is telling you that you're going to mess up before you even go into it. There are two ways I usually tell people to help with this; first, when you're skating and about to go into the jump, think about something else. Don't think about the jump. Think about what your fingers are doing, think about what's on the ceiling of the arena. Your body knows what to do; that's what muscle memory is. The other thing you can do is just don't think at all. Usually when I skate a program, I blank out. I just do it. Before you go on the ice, take a deep, calming breath. Have a coach or your mom massage your ears (it sounds weird, but it's relaxing) and close your eyes. Clear your head, then get on the ice and present. If you can't clear your head, then focus on playing to the audience. Show personality.
But most important of all is to not overthink it. Don't let it keep you up at night, and don't let it scare you. It seems so important now, but unless this is a qualifier, then messing up a jump isn't the worst thing in the world. Also, if it helps, remember that you still get points if you fall or have a shaky landing, as long as you get the rotation. Also, if you pop your jump in warm up, don't freak! The warm up doesn't define the competition.

I don't have much to say, other than I always try to remember how it feels to do the jump. I know I always tend to jump it better when I'm in a good mood, and don't think about it too much. The problem is, once you start thinking about it, you really can't stop. Just relax and be patient - It'll come back.

Remind yourself that you get some credit even if you fall, so its better to try the jump and fall than pop it.

It's really just a confience issue. You need to go into it thinking that you will land it. You need to believe in yourself and be confident.

honestly theres nothing you can do other than just STOP popping them. its all mental so you just have to no allow yourself to do it. sorry but theres not really a way to make it stop unless YOU make it stop
