Layback spin/breathing question?

This might seem like a bit of a weird question, but do you breathe when you do a layback spin? And if so, how?

I'm working on my layback, and I can get into the position easily and get around 4-5 revolutions, but after that I run out of breath and have to abort the spin. I've tried breathing as I'm spinning but for some reason I have trouble exhaling when I'm in that position. I can breathe easily in all my other spins - even my haircutter. It's just the layback.

By the way, I don't have any breathing problems usually (no asthma, etc.).

So, does anyone else have this problem? Is there a special way of breathing, do you have to learn to hold your breath, or does it just take getting used to?

Thanks! :)

4-5 revolutions doesn't seem like very long to be holding your breath. Are you also holding your breath on/before the entry, maybe because you're focusing on it? If so, you could try making a deliberate effort to breathe deeply just as you go into the layback, which would at least give you a little bit longer...

And maybe you can try adjusting your position slightly so it's still a layback but your head/neck/chest alignment is slightly different? You could experiment with that off-ice. If you find it's position-dependent, take it to your coach and discuss it with them.

Interesting question. I never really think about breathing during spins although I think I exhale when in the layback position. My coach may have told me that once but I'm not sure. It does makes more sense than holding your breath because you don't engage you core muscles when you're breathing in. It might be that you're not quite used to the position yet and the force of the spin on your body is making you feel choked up. Because even if you stop breathing during the spin, the duration shouldn't be long enough to make you feel out of breath.

yeah,I get that a bit-I choke on my spit (or my nose stuff goes back into my head (lovely isn't it lol) but my main problem is that my contact lenses, only on the layback for some reason,go into the corner of my eye leaving me blind so I always have to put that spin at the end of the program lol

but yeah,I just take a deep breath as I'm going into it and I don't think about breathing, just concentrate on the spin when I'm in it-I think if you don't think about it your body just does it automatically or something

i usually breathe when i do laybacks, but thats just me,

you should tru stretching for your layback, makig sure your in the same position as you are when your spinning, and focus on your breathing, if you cannot breathe when you are in this position, adjust until you are in a position where you can breathe, and apply this to your spin
