Doesn't Floyd deserve credit for fighting Ortiz in his comeback fight?

Floyd is giving a young fighter like Ortiz the chance of a lifetime. Not only is Floyd giving him that opportunity, but he is giving it to Ortiz at a time when Floyd is most vulnerable, considering he is coming off such a long layoff, and will have not fought in sixteen months.

Isn't that what Boxing is all about? Giving a young, elite fighter the chance to prove himself against a great fighter? Some succeed, others will fail. That is how the torch gets passed in Boxing. Floyd is a great fighter, and I think he deserves props for giving a young lion like Ortiz the chance of a lifetime, especially after being inactive for a considerable amount of time.

Update:

Forget Pacquiao for a minute. This has nothing to do with him. Assume he doesn't exist. Forget the word "tune-up".

You do not think that Floyd deserves some credit for fighting the second ranked 147lb in the world, after being retired/inactive for so long, to the point where he was removed from every and all rankings?

And why such big credit? Is Ortiz a second coming or something like that? I am excited Floyd will be coming back, nothing more nothing less. He didn't even beat Ortiz yet so what is the big deal?

Boxing is not about prize fighters giving reward to youngsters by fighting them nor boxing is a sort of passing the torch, I disagree boxing is like that.

Boxing is a manly art that basically means to fight the best opposition available (and I am not saying Ortiz is not the best opposition and Pacquiao's selection of his last couple of opponents will not get a pass either) and giving fans an entertaining fight (regardless it is a brawl type fight or a showmanship of sweet science). Boxing is lacing up gloves and fighting in the ring, that is integral.

It is a MINIMUM REQUIREMENT for a boxer to fight as often as he can without any excuses or whatever. For real, Mayweather's comeback plan is great for boxing and honestly I am excited in his comeback, but not thinking like to the extent that it is us fans who owe him the credit by fighting someone, that's irregardless, the mere fact he chose to fight once a year does not do good for boxing what more is inactivity.

He richly deserves some credit for fighting the kind of fighters since coming back from retirement late in 2009: a Juan Manuel Marquez on a roll since dropping a close decision to Pacquiao in 2007, a Shane Mosley who was then the second best welterweight and now Victor Ortiz, another top tier welterweight on a winning roll.

If Pacquiao didn't exist, then there is no one better match than Ortiz right now. And there I think is where the presumption is wrong. The criticism is that this ISN'T a tune up fight. This is THE fight that Floyd wants. Floyd doesn't fight often at all. If he goes on another year lay off does he again get a free pass and fight the second best again?

For me its not good enough, this shouldnt be a comeback fight, he shouldnt retire in between fights then expect people to patiently sit about while he possibly "tunes up" to fight Pacquiao but possibly just wants more money and will retire again.

Had he stayed active and fought someone after Mosley then this was arranged i would have much more respect for the decision.

@ Stick and move, had I said to you a few months ago that he would come back to fight Ortiz what would you have thought? Ortiz got this on the back of one fight, he has shown he is inconsistent in losing to Maidana then drawing with Peterson a few fights later, i think he needs another fight at the weight to show his consistency .

  • Most fans prefer Pacquiao vs Mayweather. Ortiz is just a tune up fight and has no claim to be an elite pound for pound fighter. He has one good win and that's it. Yes I know you are a Mayweather fan and support his racism as obvious to your racial views and discrimination in the forum but the truth is Mayweather should have waited and made a fight with Pacquiao before Pacquiao took Marquez.

Oh yeah best answer goes to a Mayweather fan or a non Asian guy. Typical you.

last i checked ortiz was a legitamate 147 titlist. And he won his title in a thriller vs an undefeated bigger man

mayweather should beat him easily because of mayweather's style, and greatness....

but make no mistake Vic Ortiz ain't no pushover fighter

he's also about 8 or 9 years younger than floyd

    the downside to ortiz:

he still is the smaller fighter, and might be used after a string of tough fights

lol, lets let a boxer explain this so you fans know.

Manny's last 4 or 5 fights, he fights guys coming off crushing losses, and he drains them down. Facts are facts. Hatton-undefeated-lost to mayweather KO. Margarito-KO by Mosely bad. De La hoya-drained down, old/done-lost biggest fight in history to mayweather. Mosely, lost to FMJ in a huge fight.

Mayweather fights guys coming off crushing wins or still capable of fighting and not drained down in weight.. Facts are facts. Hatton-undefeated. Mosely-off huge KO over Margarito. DLH-KO Mayorga & was 10 lbs heavier than when he fought pac, and DLH was still good(he admits). J.Marquez-casamayor/Diaz wins.

Mayweather is fighting yet another guy off a huge win. Mayweather is fighting Ortiz who just beat Andre Berto.

Meanwhile Pac is fighting Marquez, 39 years old!

Pac may fight all the time & be exiting, a people's champ, a great guy, but who is he fighting? As a boxer, it's easy for me not to have that cloud my judgement.

I do love Pacman, alot. But facts are facts. He is overrated and caught up in this media frenzy. Boxing is still boxing & usually the elite boxer will always beat a fighter.

Regarding the drug testing, etc. My take is, if you're clean, the test should be no problem. Now he agrees to the test? What was he hiding? Drugs probably out of his system now. See him wear down against Mosely? Not taking sides here, Floyd is at fault maybe a little bit, demanding so much money. But lets be honest, if you had the BIGGEST FIGHT OF ALL TIME in front of you, wouldn't you want to cash in on it and not let the corrupt boxing world make money off your fists? I'd demand 100 million too if I was FMJ. I think Pac saying every lbs over weight limit is a 10 mil penalty each lbs, proves to IMO, manny being scared.

My 2 cents from a boxer POV.

Why pick Ortiz if pacman can give him 75M dollars?

According to statistics, Floyd retires every tuned up fights

I think it's great. Very exciting potential and it's good for boxing to have him back. Forget his mouth and bragging, etc. just watch the talent this fighter has.
