Does his phone say connect to iTunes? If it does then you are out of luck. Check if he has the stuff saved on iTunes.

Unless something happened to it, this should be covered under warranty. Just take it to the Apple store. I know it;s expensive, but it's probably a defect and it wont cost you anything to fix it. Good luck!
