Am I supposed to get a driver's permit before taking driver's ed?

I live in Illinois, I'm not sure if that matters or not. Anyway, I'm 16 and due to taking a bunch of art classes last year I have to take driver's ed first semester of my junior year. Am I supposed to get my permit before the class? And do I just go to the DMV to get it?

Thanks :)

The first part of the Driver's Ed class will teach you what you need to know to take and pass the written test at the DMV. Then you can get your permit and be ready for the behind-the-wheel portion of the class.

Idk but in california you take drivers ed then get your permit.

http://www.teendrivingcourse.com/ is what im currently taking its has plenty of videos and pictures and examples. Its great i love it its only $25 but if you use the following code you get $3 off. I really recommened it. You can log in and off. Do it at your own pace. You have 6 months to complete the course once you register.
