There are pet scams on every single site - even legitimate sites like pet finders. While they should be legit scammers will always find a way around it by falsely using the name of a real shelter or rescue
The ONLY way you know it's not a scam is if you can go IN PERSON to pick up the dog, check the vet records, make sure the dog is responsive and playful, etc
Anyone who mentions shipping or won't let you pick up the dog in person is going to be a scam
While most of the dogs listed are legit, there are unfortunately scammers who find their way even onto legitimate sites
If there weren't any scams then Petfinders would not have had to put a scam warning on the site to warn people http://www.petfinder.com/classifieds/classifieds2....
It's impossible to tell if that post is a scam or not unless you can actually go to the rescue and pick up the dog.

Check them out personally and check out all contracts closely before handing over any money, that's your best bet.
There Shouldn't be any scams on Pet-finder, but it is a large site and there are always a few weeds that slip through the cracks.
Doesn't seem to be, but of course proceede with caution, don't be afraid to ask questions.

You mean Petfinder.com?
Yes, it's possible. You do not have to be a shelter or rescue group to advertise on that site after all - i was able to help my aunt/uncle set up an account and place their dog up for re-home (they did not go through with it and removed the ad shortly after).
When you're looking, just keep in mind that you want to MEET any dog that catches your eye. Son't enter into any contracts over the internet and don't send money electronically. Check the ad to see if it's being home through a rescue or shelter or an individual.

I am sure there are scams everywhere, but Petfinder requires 501c status to list on their site (not classifieds).
I am sure the IRS weeds out the scammers.
Why would you think this particular dog is a scam? The adoption fee is low and their website seems legit.
ETA: this is a scam:

There is always a possibility but they ar careful with who posts on the site that you are legitimate. Just watch for signs and always see the dog in person before agreeing to anything. I run a rescue and I use petfinder. I have always been pleased. Good luck!!

youll find scammers in their classifieds.
but most of the dogs listed on their searchable database are from legit shelters and rescues. Not anyone can just get themselves listed as a shelter or rescue on petfinder.
there are a few who slip thru the cracks tho.. for example gentle giants in CA is not a legit rescue, but a puppy miller

I wouldn't say there are any outright scams, but not all rescues are created equal. If you see a dog you like look in to the group's reputation and visit their facilities before you commit to taking it home.

All the dogs there are from shelters or established rescue groups. Edit: I never realized they had a classified ad section open to the general public.
Edit: Husky Haven of LA seems to be quite reputable, even though they use a hotmail address. Check out their website.
