Taking into account that according to its own figures, the Church of England has assests of 4.4bn, is it?

Is it not time, taking into account the current government funding issues, that the tax exemptions allowed, and the charitable status of religion be reviewed, and such organisations as the CoE were made to pay their way instead of being effectively supported by the UK taxpayer.

Update 2:

Please do not get bogged down of the CoE, I am asking should the tax and charitable status of any religion be removed, also, if the CoE cannot make money out of a Norman church, are the catherdrals of York and Canterbury not Norman Churches, then they should turn them over to the National Trust, who i am sure could make money out of them as historical monuments.

Update 3:

The Royal Family income is taxable and the Queen, does pay income take etc, as for getting it passed through the House of Lords, not necessary, there is something called the Parliament Act that allows a government to pass legislation that the House of Lords has rejected.

The Church of England is big business and there are bishops in The House Of Lords who would not be very happy if that happened. I doubt that the government would ever get it passed by The House Of Lords if they ever tried it because religion and politics are too closely interwoven, and a lot of politicians send their children to expensive elitist schools that have charitable status.

I agree but lets include the royal family and also make large business pay due taxes instead of using tax loopholespurposelyy left by each government.

Well, that is simply adding up property values. They don't have that money sitting in a bank account.

You can't sell Saint Paul's Cathedral in London and have it demolished to make way for highrises just because the land it sits on is worth a billion.

You are getting sucked in by the myth created by non-religious. For accounting purposes, a church building might be worth one million dollars. That is on paper. Try to sell it for a million and no one will buy it.

Churches are non-profits. They don't pay taxes on income because there is none. 4.4 billion in assets to not translate into income.
