Can I cancel my car insurance?

Right now I have my permit and want to get my license but I go to a boarding school so I only need my license for the summer. Is there a way I can get car insurance for only the summer and then cancel it before I go to school? And if there is, will that have an effect on my license? Will I have to redue the entire driving test again?

is the car going to school with you where you will be driving it? then keep the insurance because if you get caught driving the car w/o it then you will lose your license and your insurance rates when you do get insurance will go way up.

is the car going to be sitting in a garage somewhere and no one will be driving it while you are in school? Then discuss your special circumstances with your insurer. They may give you a cost break on the insurance and then you wouldn't have to reinsure it when you came back from school.

The issue here is when you drop insurance & the car hasn't been insured for longer than 30 days and you go to pick it back up then your rates will be higher because the insurance company thinks you've been driving around w/o insurance and depending on how much insurance you have on the car, you may have to have the insurance company reinspect the car before they will insure your vehicle again.

something else for you to think about. If your car is not insured while you are at school & something happens to it (it gets stolen, a tree falls on it, the garage it's in catches fire & it's destroyed) then you are plum out of luck and can't collect anything to reimburse you for the damage & loss of your property.

also if you still owe money on your car, you won't be allowed to drop the insurance because the lender will then have the right to repossess your car regardless of whether or not you've been timely in paying them. (read the fine print--insuring the vehicle is a condition of your car loan)

and finally, what happens when you come home on break? you're going to want to drive your car but you can't because if it's not insured.

so, the only way it will affect your license is if you're diving the car while it's uninsured & you get caught. otherwise, there are numerous inconvenient reasons to keep the insurance but no reasons that will penalize your license.

    1. In many states, if you continue to own the car, then you need insurance all year, because it is illegal to own a car without having insurance.

    2. If you do cancel, it may cost more to get insurance again than it would have cost to keep insurance. Having insurance for only part of each year can cost more than having insurance for all of each year.

You may cancel it, let the ins company know you will be in school and won't be driving the car and you want to cancel the policy. it will not effect your license as long as you don't get pulled over for driving without ins. you wont have to take the driver's test again.
