Can dogs get hairballs?
I have a pomeranian and he licks himself a lot throughout the night. The last 2 nights he has been hacking like he has a hairball in his throat. This only happens at night.
Any suggestions?

Yes,some dogs get hairballs, but not the same way that a cat does.A cat literally has a ball of hair come out of their throat and onto the floor, but a dog gets the type of hairballs that gets stuck in their throat and then,as you have pointed out, they're hacking it out. Most of the time you don't actually see the hairball. It's like a dog is just trying to clear his throat.Usually it goes away after they're done hacking it out and it doesn't last very long.If you see your dog licking himself too much at one time then correct him after he has been licking for too long so he will be less likely to have to hack.

Cats have raspy tongues.....very rough and grating, which pulls more hair out than a dog's tongue would, and thus they swallow more. Not all cats get hairballs.....mostly the longer haired felines are plagued with this.
