Need help about supplements and steroids?

My horse is on steroid tablets for a skin condition. I am concerned about her arthritis ( she is 22) as the steroid masks any symptoms but doesn't prevent further damage, but I can't find any information about what supplements will still work while she is on the steroid. My vet has no idea and just says she won't suffer with it now.

Please don't post suggestions about the skin condition - I've tried everything else and it was steroids or a bullet. But as she is 'well' now, I want to continue to treat her arthritis

Thank you...Gallop are you there?...

Update:

Also, please don't post about fantastic supplements for arthritis, I need to know one that will WORK WITH STEROIDS

thank you

I think Cortaflex works with steroids. At least the dog one does (one of the yard dogs had a joint problem and they were feeding Cortaflex when she had a couple of steroid injections. The injections didn't help, but she had surgery to fix it)

Search for joint supplements online and contact the suppliers/company about them - that's all you can do. Or ask your vet about some. Or email a feed company and have a chat with their equine nutritionists.

I would have thought that the steriods would help the arthritis because they are an anti-inflammatory which is what you treat arthritis with.

A joint supplement with glucosamine and MSM, that type of thing will help prevent further deterioration but there shouldn't be a problem using something like that with the steriods. The steriods shouldn't interact with herbal type supplements (almost all over the counter type supplements will be herbal based) and so that shouldn't really influence the decision over which one to buy.

If still in doubt go and speak to the feed store and see what they recommend and then get in touch with the company, almost all of them have advice lines you can call to speak to them about their products. You could also phone your vet and check for interaction.

You don't say what the skin condition is but be aware of any joint supplement having a negative impact on that. It's unlikely it would be a problem but it sounds like she has a pretty severe skin issue so it would be bad to cause that to flair up while trying to treat the arthritis. Also with arthritis, as well as trying to prevent damage the important thing for a horse her age is that she's comfortable and not in pain from the arthritis even if it's still there and the steriods will definately help with that - one of the treatments for severe arthritis is joint injections of steriods (they make a huge difference to pain levels and amount of function, I speak from personal experience) so the oral steriods should help with the arthritis as well as the skin condition.

Adequan and Legend are two GREAT treatments for arthritis, but they are injections so they are pretty pricey. Another good one is Corta-Flx, which is just a liquid or pelleted feed supplement (in my opinion the liquid is more effective). Cosequin is another that I haven't used on horses before, but I had good luck with it for my dogs. I have known quite a few people that got good results for horses though.

Any knowledgeable vet should be able to tell you what will work. But I've known horses that were on steroids and were still given adequan AND legend...yes they still work.

supplements are multivitamin tonics... these are safe... steroids are life saving drugs... and are dangerous if administered for other purposes...
