trailer lights not working 2005 nissan xterra?

Question

i just installed a trailer hitch and a 4 flat wiring harness i have a 2005 nissan xterra when i plug it in and turn the turn signals on the light on the dash comes on once then it shuts off im pretty sure i wired it correctly i used a tester and everything. if someone would help me please i would greatly appreciate it....
OH and for everyone thats going to say use the tow package that comes with the xterra well i cant when i bought the xterra the plug was broken and the wires were all just hanging there so thats out of the question

It sounds like you have blown a fuse, and that would happen if you have a mis-wire on the plug. was it a 7 pin or 4 pin originally? Check your fuses.
