What are some affordable yet nice neighborhood of London?

I am planning to move to London, but I am not sure which neighborhood is the best...

I was thinking of Croydon...

Anyway, which neighborhoods of London should I avoid (because of criminal activity, poverty, etc.)?

Thanks!

@FAllen Angel, OMG where have you been living? Under a rock, the area is FULL of crime!!!

Some woman got raped and murdered near Queens road station. Another woman got stabbed in the head the bottom of the market last year.

A grandmother was raped in the Sainsbury's car park when we first moved here!

My next door neighbour is a drug dealer and a pimp!

Do you live in the Village by chance?? LOL

My partner grew up here. It may be diverse, but there is a LOT of hate crime and crime in general. We are getting out next year!

In fact, my partner went to school with one of the people involved in 7/7.

    Says it all!

To the asker: Don't do East London and Don't do South London either. I have lived in both!

Hi, if you're looking for an affordable area to live the best advice is to look for an undesirable postcode. Since the late 1990s the property ownership boom in Greater London has displaced opportunities for average/low income earners. A significant proportion of people in London only survive here by having their rent and council tax subsidised by the state. To pay for your own living in a well regarded London area you have to either have a very well paid job, rent a room within a shared house or inherit property. Almost all the 'London proper' postcode areas are unaffordable. Surrounding the London postcode area are some less fashionable postcode areas. Croydon is an unfashionable postcode area, but the town is a nice place to live and the extensive suburbs provide much scope to find slightly affordable living space. Similar relative affordability without compromising too much on the quality of the area can also be found in suburbs like Bexleyheath, Ilford and Ruislip

It depends on what type of environment you are looking for. There is South London (Croydon/ peckham/ Brixton) which have a high Arfo-Carribean population. But, also on the news a lot for gang crime etc.

East London - Stratford isn't too expensive either. Has a large Indian population, and less heard about crime.

North London is a good place. For me I would prefer it there. But, everyone is different.

You should consider travel too - if you are working etc, it can take an hour or more at times to get across London.

    Avoid South London!

Compared to other parts of the world, No place in London is THAT dangerous, but I personally love living either central London (Islington, Kings Cross, Marylebone, etc) if you can afford it!

Or Living in North London, crime is not high and the location is very 'cushy'. Places like Enfield, Palmers Green, etc.

ps. East London is Great too!

All this talk about south of the river is nonsense. It works like this. Think of London as a fried egg on a plate. The yolk in extremely affluent. The white is where there is poverty and deprivation, the plate is the suburbs, leafy and affluent. And that counts for whether you are north, south. east or west.

I would suggest living in the following suburban areas, all of which have good frequent Underground or rail links into central London:

    Richmond

    Barnes

    East Sheen

    Putney

    Kingston

    Twickenham

    Teddington

    Surbiton

    Beckenham

    Bromley

    Pinner

    Ruislip

Areas most to be avoided are all of east London, Kentish Town. Hackney and all areas of south London other than the ones I've listed

East London all the way! Lol I live there, and Walthamstow is an AWESOME neighborhood. So multi cultral. Criminal activity isn't such a big issue here.

    Hi aa,

I live in South London and quite like it here. I have lived in West and North London also.

You should come to London and take a little time to have a look around and see how you feel in each of the areas.

    Good luck in your hunt.
