Sports Betting Question?

anyone have any idea how important computer programs are to sports betting? It seems that you hear about highly sophisticated bettors who either have or are developing these computer programs that can accurately win long term

seems very difficult - most sports bettors are not computer programmers - and wouldnt it be extremely expensive and or difficult to create one? uploading a season of final scores and box scores and being able to sort through data based on any statistic you want - seems that if its possible to create them; its not cheap and most individual bettors are not able to use this method

(Yes I have heard of the computer group in the 80s but thats only one example)

maybe this should be more of a computer programming question than sports betting, because it just sounds very hard to create one - with all the data that would be needed.

I think the only function of computers in sportsbetting is to save time and repetitive work (they don't generate picks the handicappers wouldn't have made themselves). Handicappers who use formulaic methods to make their own spreads most likely don't sit there with a calculator and manually crunch the numbers for each game. A lot of them probably just use Excel. One could make their own program if one wanted (I had considered it before but I don't remember what Excel was lacking, if anything). I don't think it would need too many lines of code (time maybe but code no), and it would definitely be free to make. Probably only basic programming skills would be required, which anyone can quickly teach themselves with all the resources on the net.

Maybe the program could scrape data from websites instead of requiring input. I'm not an advanced programmer so I don't know how much work it would be to make the program do that. (I'll ask my geek friend.) That would be a definite advantage over Excel.

I always find these topics interesting. There's no easy way to pick winners. I woud say that experience is important, and knowing how to gage money lines and predict which way they move before they do can both increase your odds, which are already vastly stacked against you, especially with online-betting - what with the vig, and withdrawl fees:

A perfect example of catching a line before it moves can be evidenced by the line of the monster UFC heavyweight fight between Velasquez and Dos Antos that will be taking place this fall. It came out at -125 for Dos Antos. BUT, anyone that follows UFC knows Velasquez is the the safer pick - he's the best wrestler Dos Antos has faced by a large margin, and he also has better cardio and almost as good hands. All of this is why the line moved to -150 Velasquez within two days.

Regardless of all this though, some people are just really good at analyzing sports and especially knowing how to properly allocate their bankroll when wagering and withdrawing. A trick that I have developed is to go hard for a couple weeks and then take a break. I don't really think it's healthy, ha, or economically feasible to be betting on everything every day. I prefer to try to make a two-three week run of it on solid bets (I'm a big fan of taking money line favorites when I'm very confident they're going to win. An example of this would be the Bruins last night. I put $1000 on them at -155, and just cashed out +$1,651. Granted it took me over two weeks to get my winnings up to $1000. Still, I think focusing on fewer and bigger bets, during a shorter time period, is best. But that's just a personal preference. Another personal preference of mine is to focus on the playoffs and important games - I just don't like to bet on meaningless regular season games when you have no idea what kind of effort teams are going to be putting forth.

By the way, I've won 5 of my last six bets, and am listing them below:

I don't think getting the raw data is that hard these days, but knowing what to do with it is the tough part.

If it was easy, everyone would do it, that's why some people pay for the information.
