sewing machine for dummies?
I just need something simple and small so I don't have to do the odd sewing job by hand.
what would you suggest?

Brother, they are light weight, sew well and have numbers on it as instruction for threading. I have one I have had since 1979 (it still sews) and one I got a couple of years ago. They are inexpensive as well. My first one has only 2 stitches, straight stitch and zig zag. Now you can get them with 50 stitches at a reasonable cost. As a beginning seamstress you shouldn't invest in an expensive machine until you 1. know for sure you will use it and 2. do some research on exactly what features you want on it. I grew up sewing on a singer machine but they aren't nearly as good as they were years ago. You can get Brother machines at Wal-mart.

Avoid the hand held and mini type sewing machines... they never work well for long if they work at all.
