Taking relatives to see X-Men: First class?

They haven't seen any of the original X-Men movies with Patrick Stewart yet... should they watch that first to have a basic grasp of who can do what, and why?

Or does First Class explain things well enough so they won't be wondering every 10 minutes what's happening?

I think it'd be better to take them to this first because it actually shows who all the most important characters are and how they came to be and what they do

The movies are standalone events - meaning that you don't have to have seen the prior pics. Good thing, too, since these movies are often released a couple of years apart. Most members of the audience won't even remember the details from the prior pictures.
