    Lincoln was faced with unprecedented problems, and I'm not saying I could have done any better, but I just can't shake the feeling that somehow the unimaginable violence and brutality of the Civil War could have been avoided. It's hard to say his views made people "safe from violence".

    That would be nice wouldn't it? Ideally it does stand the test of time but realistically I think it's gone by the wayside.
