Am I required by law to stop for a school bus on a bicycle?
I am planning on purchasing a bike, and may be riding it to and from work. Around the same time I'll be riding is when the buses are out to pick the kids up and drop them off from school. Now because I'm on a bike, am I still required to stop for the bus should I encounter it with its lights flashing? I do know that I have to stop for stop signs and stop lights, but wasn't sure if that applied to school buses as well. I live in Connecticut, if that helps.

By law...you have to follow the same rules governing cars, trucks, buses & other vehicles. After all - you are a vehicle too.

Obey the same rules while riding your bike that you would follow while driving a car. You live in the United States, think about liability laws and what might happen to you if you hit a child who was crossing the street after getting out of a school bus while the red lights are still flashing. For the sake of saving a few seconds you could lose everything you have.

I am a school bus driver. Legally yes you have to stop. The more important thing is you SHOULD stop. The answers that say "just make sure no cops are around" are either people who don't have kids or don't care about them. You can do ALOT of damage to a child on a bike. Is it really worth saving a minute or two not stopping? Be safe and stop not because it's the law but because it's the safe and responsible thing to do.

Bethany,
Sure you need to obey the law, just the same as all other vehicles. I say this with tongue in cheek. You don't have to worry so much with the police as you do the parents. The parents that linger around the bus stop to pick up their kids are the same type of parents that participate in the school system. Some of these parents will be vociferous to any violation of the law around their children and sue. It doesn't take much to tee off a parent.
Best.

In most cases the law sees bicycles the same as cars. In this case not stopping would pose the same danger as not stopping in a car - you could hit a child and hurt yourself. I'd stop or at the very least roll carefully past. I wouldn't expect a ticket but it all depends on if the driver/kids/parents make a big deal out of it.
