Tactics for 4-a-side volleyball?

I am playing in a mixed volleyball tournament at the weekend. The games on Saturday are played 4-vs-4 and the games on Sunday are normal 6-a-side.

I'm OK with the 6-a-side but how do we go about playing on 4-vs-4?

I think we have to have a maximum of 2 males on court at any one time. Our only recognised setter is male (although we have one female who can set if required).

So, what should we do? Where should we all stand and where should we all be ready to cover? We are a team of very mixed abilities.

To add on to what Cosimo said (and I agree with the diamond formation), have your guys play opposite each other and the girls play opposite each other. Guys jump higher, so you will go from having two strong hitters, to a strong blocker, on and off as you rotate. Also, when one of the girls is setting in the middle front position, you can have the guys at the 4/5 position and the 1/2 position come up for a single block, have the setter cover tips, and have two players digging.

Also, as a little extra pointer, with a single block, you want to let your defense know what you are doing before you do it because there is far more court to cover. Decide what you will block if you are the one blocking, whether you are going to take away a line shot or a cross shot by aligning yourself for your block accordingly. You can let your defense know what you are going to block by holding your fingers behind your back and signaling a 1 for blocking line, and a 2 for blocking cross. It really does help the defense set up better in the back when they know.

Unless there are any rules to prevent this, I'd suggest a diamond formation. Setter in the middle (position 3) at the front, one player to the left effectively playing positions 4 and 5, and one to the right playing 1 and 2. One player at position 6 doing just back row work.

The player at 6 serves. The left and right side players both attack and defend, the setter attacks, sets or blocks.

Receipt of serve is done with 3 players; at position 1/2, 4/5 and 6.

Everyone plays every position (no switching). It makes it simpler that way. As you've got a middle setter it takes you way back to the very basics where you probably learned using a middle setter and a W formation on receipt of serve. Setting to either side doesn't require as much strength or skill from your setter compared to setting from 2 and trying to set position 4.

This is the formation I've always played on 4-a-side games and generally works quite well.

    Have fun.

I would say on serve receive your best bet is going to be 3 in the back and one in the front. Your gonna have to make sure that your setter is okay with setting back row and if he isn't then on serve receive whoever is in the front should set.

Offensively, you could have a setter and a hitter in the front and two back row. This is really good if your opposing team has a very good hitter.

For defense I would only have the one hitter in the front blocking. Like i said it all depends on how the other team hits. Make sure that if there's only one person blocking, someone is behind him/her to cover tips.

If the other team is not good with hitting then have the hitter in the front cover short balls.
