My baby spits up shortly after nursing?
My baby is three days old and I plan to breastfeed. Shortly after nursing, he usually spits up yellowish curd looking spitup. Normally I wouldn't worry because according to books this is normal, but he also only feeds for five minutes on one breast (my milk JUST came in), wakes up usually in about forty to fifty minutes later and feeds for another five. That is it. He has the normal number of dirty diapers but i want to be sure he is getting enough. How can I tell?
Also, he sometimes spits out my breast and sucks on my finger or his hand instead. I try to offer again and he has a fit.

Babies spit up. It's entirely normal.
Newborns nurse briefly and often because they have tiny tummies and especially in the first few days, there is very little colostrum available.
Babies enjoy sucking and may at times want to suck on a finger (yours or their own) rather than the breast.
At 3 days of age he should be having 3 wet diapers per day. Tomorrow he will have 4. If he's having that many, he's getting enough.
Everything sounds 100% normal and 100% fine. Keep up the good work.
EDIT: Given that you HAVE done your reading, I trust you know enough to ignore Linda R's appallling poor, dangerous and dated advice to force-feed cereal to your baby to make him sleep 5-6 hours at a stretch. (She never mentions in her posts that her children are now adults, and her 'honest old fashioned doctor' was practicing in the 1960's or 1970's, when few doctors knew ANYTHING about breastfeeding, and babies were expected to eat on rigid 4 hour schedules and sleep all night ASAP.)

If he is having the normal mumber of dirty diapers he is just fine. Babies love to suck, and they nurse frequently at this age-I have BF two kids and yes it seems like they are eating all the time when they are newborns but they will start to spread out the feedings a bit more over time, However, even when they get older they may ":cluster feed"-nurse a lot more often at certain times of day. It doesn't mean your milk is lacking in "quality" if he nurses often its just normal.
And yes all babies spit up as lng as he doesn't seem to be in pain don't worry,
ANd for the love of God don't give a newborn cereal as someone else suggested.

This is normal newborn behavior, and none of it is a problem. He's supposed to eat very frequently right now.
Because there is no way to know whether or not the baby is getting enough to eat, he should be weighed to day or tomorrow in the physician's office. This will work itself out as the baby grows.

Sounds like he's not being burped thoroughly during and after every feeding.
Anyway.....when my first was born.....he was nursing every 1-2 hours and chewing on his fist.
I spoke to his great honest 'old fashioned' doctor and was told to buy some baby rice cereal, mix a tiny amount with milk (to a gravy consistency), feed to him with a baby spoon and then nurse him.
I did and then my son slept 5-6 hours between nursing. I had to do this because my son was hungry and my breast milk quality wasn't enough to satisfy him....
